I tried an experiment...?

i filled a gl with water upto brim. Gently placed a cover lid on it. When i tried to hold it upside down the water didn't spill!!!! Lid was also stuck to the gl. I know its atmospheric pressure, but i dont think this will work if i keep a 5 litre jar instead of gl. So what is the quantity of water thats required to make it work? Does it have any thing to do with weight of the cover lid?
